CBD Oil Dosage Guide: How to Find the Right Dose for You

Most people who try CBD and give up within a week made the same mistake: they started at the wrong dose, felt nothing, and assumed CBD doesn't work.

It does work, but only if you approach it the right way. CBD isn't like an over-the-counter painkiller where you take two and wait. It's more like a supplement that works in conversation with your biology. The dose that works brilliantly for your neighbor might do nothing for you, and that's not a flaw in the product. It's just how the endocannabinoid system works.

As a pharmacist with decades of experience, I've watched people walk away from something genuinely useful because no one explained this to them clearly. This guide is our attempt to fix that.

Here's what we'll cover:

  • Why CBD dosing isn't one-size-fits-all
  • How to calculate a starting dose based on your body weight
  • How to measure drops accurately
  • How long it actually takes to feel results
  • How to adjust your dose over time safely
  • Which of our potencies is right for where you're starting

Let's get into it.

Why CBD Dosage Isn't One-Size-Fits-All

CBD is processed by your body's endocannabinoid system (ECS), a network of receptors and signaling molecules that help regulate sleep, mood, inflammation, pain response, and more. Every person's ECS is slightly different. Factors that directly affect how you'll respond to a given dose include:

  • Body weight, larger body mass generally requires a higher dose to feel the same effect
  • Metabolism, a faster metabolism processes CBD more quickly, which can shorten duration
  • ECS sensitivity, some people have naturally more active endocannabinoid systems than others
  • Method of use, sublingual (under the tongue) delivers CBD into the bloodstream much faster and more efficiently than simply swallowing it
  • Product type, full spectrum CBD (like ours) includes the full range of cannabinoids and terpenes, which work together synergistically in what's known as the entourage effect. This means full spectrum products are generally more effective at lower doses than isolates

The bottom line: start low, observe how your body responds, and adjust from there. This is the same principle we apply in pharmaceutical dosing, and it's the right approach here too.

CBD Dosage Chart by Body Weight

The most reliable starting framework is to dose by body weight. The following table reflects commonly used starting ranges. These are not medical prescriptions, they're practical starting points. Always consult your healthcare provider if you have underlying conditions or take prescription medications.

Body Weight Starting Dose Moderate Dose Higher Dose
Under 130 lbs 10–12mg 15–20mg 25–30mg
130–175 lbs 12–15mg 20–25mg 30–40mg
175–225 lbs 15–20mg 25–35mg 40–55mg
Over 225 lbs 20–25mg 35–50mg 55–75mg

A note on these numbers: "Starting dose" means where you begin, not where you stay. Give each dose level at least 5–7 days before deciding it isn't working. The endocannabinoid system responds to consistent supplementation, not single doses.

How to Measure CBD Drops Accurately

The milligram (mg) count on the bottle refers to total CBD content in the entire bottle, not per serving. Here's how to calculate what's actually in each drop:

Formula: Total CBD (mg) ÷ Bottle volume (mL) = mg per mL

Product Bottle Size mg Per mL Approx. mg Per Drop
300mg Tincture 30mL 10mg/mL ~0.5mg
600mg Tincture 30mL 20mg/mL ~1mg
1000mg Tincture 30mL 33mg/mL ~1.7mg
2000mg Tincture 30mL 67mg/mL ~3.3mg
3000mg Tincture 60mL 50mg/mL ~2.5mg
5000mg Tincture 60mL 83mg/mL ~4.2mg

Standard dropper = approximately 1mL = about 20 drops

So if you're a 150-pound person starting at 15mg and using our 1000mg tincture, you'd take roughly 9 drops sublingually. That's a very manageable amount to measure and adjust.

Pro tip: Use the dropper to dispense the oil under your tongue, not onto it. The tissue under the tongue is highly vascular, holding the oil there for 30–60 seconds before swallowing significantly improves how much CBD actually reaches your bloodstream.

How Long Until You Feel Results?

Same session (sublingual method):

  • Onset: 15–45 minutes
  • Peak: 1–2 hours
  • Duration: 4–6 hours

Swallowed (not sublingual):

  • Onset: 45–90 minutes
  • Absorption is lower due to first-pass metabolism in the liver

Cumulative daily use:

  • Many users report the most noticeable results after 1–2 weeks of consistent daily use
  • The endocannabinoid system responds better with sustained, regular supplementation than with sporadic use

If you tried CBD once and felt nothing, this is likely why. One dose of an under-strength product taken inconsistently is rarely going to show you what CBD can actually do. Give it a fair trial: consistent dose, correct potency, at least 10 days.

How to Adjust Your Dose Over Time

Think of finding your optimal CBD dose as a 2–4 week process, not a single event.

Week 1: Start at your weight-based starting dose. Take it at the same time each day. Note any changes in the areas you're focused on, sleep quality, physical comfort, general sense of calm. Don't change anything yet.

Week 2: If you're noticing nothing, increase by 5–10mg. If you're noticing subtle effects, stay where you are and give it more time.

Week 3–4: Fine-tune. Most people find their "sweet spot" somewhere in this window.

Signs you've found your optimal dose:

  • Noticeable improvement in your target area
  • Effects feel consistent day to day
  • No unwanted side effects

Signs you may have taken too much:
CBD is considered very safe, and serious side effects are rare. However, high doses can occasionally cause drowsiness, dry mouth, or mild digestive changes. If you experience these, reduce your dose by 5–10mg and give it a few days. These effects are dose-dependent and typically resolve quickly.

If you're taking prescription medications, especially blood thinners, anti-seizure medications, or anything with a "grapefruit warning" on the label, talk to your pharmacist or physician before starting CBD. See our full FAQ for more detail.

Choosing the Right Potency to Match Your Dose

Your Target Dose Best Starting Product
10–15mg/day 300mg Tincture, 10mg/mL, ideal for micro-dosers and new users
15–25mg/day 600mg Tincture, 20mg/mL, great everyday moderate use
25–40mg/day 1000mg Tincture, 33mg/mL, popular mid-range option
40–70mg/day 2000mg Tincture, 67mg/mL, experienced users
70mg+/day 3000mg or 5000mg Tincture, high-potency

All tinctures come in four flavors: Mint, Cinnamon, Natural, and Orange Mist.

Final Thought: Start Low, Go Slow, Stay Consistent

You're not looking for the maximum dose you can tolerate. You're looking for the minimum effective dose, the lowest amount that delivers the result you're after. That's true whether we're talking about CBD or any other bioactive compound.

Start where the chart says to start. Give it real time. Adjust incrementally. And if you're not sure where to begin, feel free to call us at 800-431-3651, we're happy to walk you through it.
